for sifting through books for younger readers based on a multitude of categories, like mystery, nature, or business. For voracious adult new readers who may quickly outgrow your adult literacy collection, yet not be ready for adult level books, this tool can allow you to quickly search books for youth by grade level, and then narrow those down to titles that would be interesting to adults.

Even if you don't know an adult student's lexile score, you can still look for books by grade level equivalent based on their last TABE test, and add information about the books the student normally reads, like they are usually at my level, they are usually too easy, or they are usually too difficult.

Even though the results are books for children, you can still find something with central adult characters by reading the one sentence summaries in the list of results. The interest level is also indicated.

For example, I put in 4th grade as the reading level, and I said that the books I read in school are usually just right for my level. On the next screen I selected nature as one of my topics, et voila, I found The Heart Calls Home, which is a book I would love to read as an adult:

"Obi tries to make a new life on a S. Carolina island, while waiting for his soul mate who is studying up North."

Grade level: 4

Lexile level: 650L

Ages: 12 to 17 (interest level)

Page count: 175

Publisher: Walker and Company, 1999

ISBN: 0802786367

ISBN13: 9780802786364

This tool definitely makes being an adult literacy librarian easier! The issue has come up in my TOEFL prep class in which all of the students want to be able to do well on the test, yet they are all coming into the class with different reading levels--some as low as 9th grade, I imagine. The target reading level of material on the TOEFL exam is between 13 and 14, which is the level that most college survey textbooks are written at.

This short article from About.com gives reading advice for children, yet is equally appropriate for adults. I was happy to stumble upon this article and realize that I provide these strategies for my adult ESL students at the Berwyn Library and at LTHS as a normal part of instruction.

If you know where I can find some peer reviewed estimates of how many hours a person would have to read in order to increase a GLE (grade level equivalent) level, please let me know! St. Leonard's ESL program is in its third year; textbooks were their biggest need. Students will be using these new textbooks for the first time in January 2011.

The Library has been reaching out to adult literacy and ESL programs throughout 2010 and we will continue the effort into 2011. We are focused on increasing free access to ESL teaching and learning materials that are often too expensive for adult literacy programs with small budgets. The Berwyn Public Library is the community's "Leader in Literacy and Lifelong Learning." Harvey, president and CEO of ProLiteracy, today said he is pleased by the action of the House Subcommittee on Appropriations for Labor, Health and Human Services approving the $612 million allocation for state grants to adult education proposed by President Obama in his FY 2011 budget.

"This funding represents a $30 million increase in state grants to local literacy and basic education programs from the 2009 budget," Harvey said. "It's a modest but badly needed down payment on what we hope will be an even greater investment down the road."

ProLiteracy has learned that the subcommittee approved the President's state grant funding level as part of its review of appropriations bills on July 15. ProLiteracy also learned that the subcommittee approved a $30 million appropriation for a Workforce Innovation Fund. This fund will allow adult literacy and basic education programs funded under the Workforce Investment Act Title I and II to work together, and with other local and regional partners, to develop comprehensive proposals to scale promising practices.

"It is my hope that these innovation funds will make it possible for more community-based literacy programs to receive desperately needed resources. These programs traditionally work with adults at the lowest literacy levels, those most in need of instruction so they can find jobs that pay a living wage," Harvey said.

Congress Declares National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week 2010

WASHINGTON – The National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) invites you to join them in celebrating National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 13-17, 2010. She attends my Tue/Thu night class that finishes at 9:00 P.M.

She's been practicing her English at work. She worked there for many years without speaking English. People had asked her why she didn't learn to speak English sooner. Her supervisor has seen her confidence and her ability to speak improve so much over the last month that he called my supervisor at LT. They've set up a workplace ESL program so I can teach employees right there in the facility. I'll be there for 10 weeks from August to October. How exciting!

AzarGrammar.com

The Azar Grammar series has been a staple of my grammar teaching since I started teaching ESL. I have students who tell other people about how much they love the books, which delights me still today.

AzarGrammar.com has many high quality materials you can download for free right now. There are 6 new Brookfield library patrons as a result. I personally invited them to the library, gave them a brochure with pictures of our materials from our new ESL collection, and I promoted our upcoming free language and reading programs for the Fall. If you ever wanted to appeal to the trendy in order to make your classes or tutoring a ton more fun, this is the magazine for you! Each issue includes a CD with the audio version of articles, telephone calls, fun grammar modules, jokes, and much more.

There are teacher pages you can purchase from the website, or you can just make your own to go with each segment you want to use in class. They have classroom subscriptions too. If you have an overhead machine, you could skip the cost and just use one magazine. Very bright colors, glossy pages, and full of content. It would take an ESL student weeks to go through all of it!

There's 4 different levels of material in each issue: Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced. Just a heads up--the Pre-Intermediate is for what we would think of as High Intermediate, and the Advanced is more advanced than People magazine, but very educational. The advanced level would be good for students who are at a high school senior level, or adults who've done a lot of independent reading. With 4 levels in each issue, your student will have something to read or listen to for sure. With the British English included, I have as much fun as my students do as I listen to the audio.

This magazine is now available for checkout at the Brookfield Library! It was similar to Crossroads Café for English learners, which featured "a city café where six characters come together and discuss life in their new country." It's a great series, but a little outdated. Now, Connect with English features a central character named Rebecca who travels across the US on her way to materializing her dreams as a singer.

As for pricing, Connect With English is less expensive than Crossroads Café. All the videos can be shown for free in the classroom with streaming media (can't download). So that means all you'd have to purchase are the books. Talk to your local literacy agency to see if they have these for loan. Or speak with a nice librarian at your public library to see if the workbooks could be purchased for the collection. Your students will be happy just to borrow the books and it always helps circulation statistics at the library.

U.S.A.
