Great Stories...Fast!

We have a small time frame to encourage a joy in reading with our students.

If you are looking for something that appeals to many interests with the goal of helping students develop a love of reading on their own, consider using the Fastback and Double Fastback Series.

These "high-interest novels build a strong knowledge base while encouraging independent reading practice" for "reading levels of grades 4-5 and interest levels of grades 6-12." (Pearson)

The genres include: Romance, Mystery, Sports, Spy, Horror, and S.O.S. (Strange Occurrence Squad).

You can ask for the Fastback Series at your local literacy agency, or you can borrow them through your local library. If your public library doesn't have them, request them through interlibrary loan.

Welcome to Libraries and Literacy!

Thanks for your interest in my blog. As a new volunteer adult literacy tutor and public library volunteer, I hope to share some of my challenges and successes as I find my way within a suburban Chicagoland career.

I'm originally from a small town in rural northwestern Pennsylvania. We didn't have a lot of resources growing up, but I was able to power through and get my college degree. It only took 8 years from the time I started...

I might be getting a late start in my career, but I feel like I'm better adjusted for the extra time I took. Even now, I'm taking a different approach in my life ahead because I'm doing first what most people do last, which is to volunteer. On my tight budget, I'll probably have to leave traveling the world for retirement!
