More GED and Citizenship Success | Berwyn Public Library

Noemi C. recently passed the GED test with the help of some take-home study materials she picked up at our GED study group. She is continuing to study math with us for Morton College’s placement test, which is the next stepping stone in her journey toward a professional career.

Maria R. became a US citizen last month. Maria studied with us at the Citizenship study Group for about 3 months to work on learning the 100 questions and to improve her conversation skills in English.

As always, we appreciate the time our volunteers invest in helping our neighbors achieve the “American dream,” and we appreciate the essential funding we received from ALA and DGLF.

2014 American Dream Grant Final Report

This report shows how our collection, spaces, and program evolved over four years. It is my belief that the Berwyn Public Library truly embodies what it means to be a Leader in Literacy and Lifelong Learning.

Easy-to-Read Online Bibles

A volunteer tutor recently requested a suggestion for easy-to-read bibles in print, but now that there are so many online, I thought I would post a few favorites here on the blog.

The online passages can easily be printed and used in tutoring sessions, making it easy to write on the text to find unknown words and make other notes. It could be easier than carrying around a heavy bound copy.

Bible Gateway: Bible Gateway is a searchable online Bible in more than 200 versions and 70 languages that you can freely read, research, and reference anywhere. Choose from more than 1,200 Bible versions in over 900 languages on your computer, phone, or tablet -- with many available as audio Bibles.

The Bible in Basic English: is the largest free online Bible website for verse search and in-depth studies.

Two New Parent ESL Classes at Berwyn, IL Schools

Just checking in to mention a little bit about our two new parent ESL classes that we started at Havlicek School and at Freedom Middle School. Despite the cold, we have reached more than 20 new adult learners by beginning the ESL classes right after they drop off their kids at school.

Many are coming in at the high beginning level, with a few at higher levels. Most are from Mexico and have been in the US for at least 10 years, but have only taken 1 or 2 English classes. About half have never taken an English class before.

We will be partnering with Literacy Volunteers of Western Cook County (LVWCC) to help us manage open enrollment. Six new learners started just this morning, and it will be great to have some support from the program coordinator and volunteer tutors at LVWCC to get everyone up to speed in the next few weeks.

Until next time, keep warm!
